The number keeps increasing. The still provisional number of deaths after the earthquakes that struck Turkey and Syria on Monday now exceeds 11,200 people, according to new reports released this Wednesday.
The death toll in Turkey stands at 8,574, announced Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who visited the city of Kahramanmaras, the epicenter of the earthquake, while in Syria 2,662 bodies were removed from the rubble.
access difficulties
According to the Turkish president, 50,000 people were injured and rescued three days after the disaster. Syrian doctors and authorities for their part mentioned 5,000 wounded.
“We had difficulties at first with the airports and the roads but today is better and tomorrow will be even better,” said the Turkish head of state to calm criticism and anger at the slow pace of relief.
“We have mobilized all our resources, the State is doing its job with Afad (public aid organization) and the interested municipalities with all the means at their disposal,” he insisted.
Erdogan, in power since 2003 and a candidate for re-election in May, also announced the distribution of 10,000 Turkish liras (494 euros) to each affected family.
