The Russian mercenary company Wagner will stop hiring prisoners to fight on behalf of the Moscow government in Ukraine, businessman and company founder Yevgueni Progozhin said Thursday.
‘Yes indeed. Prisoner recruitment by the Wagner private military company has ended [os contratos] absolutely”said Yevgueni Progozhin in statements he published on the digital messaging network Telegram.
Yevgueni Progozhin, who is considered close to Russian President Vladimir Putin, referred to questions raised by the Russian media more than a month ago about the end of contracts with the prison population.
“We honor our commitments to those who currently work for us”he adds.
According to the organization Rus Siadiaschi, which monitors the situation of Russian prisoners, Wagner has so far accepted 35,000 prisoners who were in the Russian prison system.
According to the same organization, Wagner has “promised a pardon” to contractors fighting as mercenaries in Ukraine.
