Von der Leyen ‘impressed’ by progress made towards Ukraine’s EU membership

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said Thursday that she was impressed with Ukraine’s progress on the road to joining the European Union (EU), pointing to a report from Brussels as early as autumn.

In a joint press conference with the presidents of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, and of the European Council, Charles Michel, the leader of the community executive stressed that “it is impressive to see how Ukraine has advanced in the necessary reforms and is working on the seven steps [acordados com a UE]with great professionalism and enormous quality”.

Von der Leyen noted that an oral report should be published in the spring, although he noted that “the main goal is to show the progress made in a written report, an expansion report, in the autumn.”

Charles Michel also underlined “the impressive progress” made by kyiv since it was granted EU candidate country status in June 2022.

For his part, Volodymyr Zelensky expressed the wish that a decision be made by the end of this year.
