Costa: There was “close positions” between Ukraine and the EU

European leaders concluded a summit in Brussels this morning, which lasted 17 hours and essentially featured the participation of Volodymyr Zelensky.

For the Prime Minister, António Costa, the participation of the Ukrainian president at the summit was a “marking moment”, enabling a face-to-face debate on European support for Ukraine.

Prime Minister António Costa believes that, in terms of expansion, there were “close positions” between Ukraine and the European Union.

“A situation point has been made with regard to the work that Ukraine is developing, with a view to meeting the set of requirements in order to make progress in the negotiations for accession to the European Union,” said António Costa, who is responsible for it was considered to be “a very remarkable moment and which certainly reflects a great closeness of positions between the European Union and Ukraine”.

On the European side, António Costa says there is no doubt about Ukraine’s ability to implement the reforms, “the Council has expressly recognized the efforts made by Ukraine to meet the criteria”.

“None of us will have trouble imagining the added difficulty of carrying out this work in the context of war, as we see,” the prime minister stressed.

However, the Portuguese government is among those warning of the need for reforms in the Brussels institutions so that a new member state can be welcomed into the European community.

For António Costa, the meeting with Zelensky was not only symbolic, but also an opportunity to discuss aid to Ukraine.

“It was important for us to speak together, reaffirm Russia’s condemnation of this unjust war against Ukraine, strengthen statements of support for Ukraine, and analyze with President Zelensky other concrete ways to support the Ukrainian people and Ukraine in their struggle. in defense of international law and to achieve peace,” said António Costa.

“I have confirmed our willingness to actively participate in three of the topics, those related to food security, those related to energy security and those related to ecocide,” the head of government added, referring to He attended meetings with Zelensky , on the sidelines of the summit, which also served as a forum for the leaders to discuss Volodymyr Zelensky’s 10-point plan to achieve peace.

On military support, António Costa “described in detail the shipments in progress, namely the leopards. And of course President Zelensky, who is currently at a stage where a significant and urgent reinforcement of his military capacity is needed, is of course satisfied with the effort that the various Member States have made to support”.
