Michel Hazanavicius, back from Ukraine, talks about a “very intense trip” on BFMTV

French director Michel Hazanavicius is the ambassador of the United24 program, a fundraising platform for Ukraine. He returned Thursday from a stay in the Ukraine, where he met Volomyr Zelensky.

Ambassador of a fundraising program for Ukraine, Michel Hazanavicius has just returned from Ukraine. He declares this Friday before the microphone of BFMTV. “There are many countries that need help, he stresses, but Ukraine really needs help.” Last fall he organized an auction of cinema memorabilia to benefit the country and raised 250,000 euros.

“I organized a collective gesture of cinema”, thus recalls the filmmaker, evoking the donations of Catherine Deneuve, Tom Hanks, Guillermo del Toro, Alain Chabat, Jean-Paul Rappeneau, Nakache and Toledano, Omar Sy. Many of us have donated items.

“I was looking for the best way to use this money,” he adds, explaining how he turned to the United24 platform.

Recently returned from Ukraine, Michel Hazanavicius evokes a “little period of rehabilitation” necessary to recover from such a trip. “It’s a very intense journey, very emotionally charged, full of unexpected emotions.” “The landscape is changing a bit,” he adds.

“Life Pulse”

“I was not in front areas,” specifies the director. “But people are fighting for victory. They’re in the action, they’re turned towards life. That’s what struck me, this drive for life.”

If you think you have a certain “connection” with Volodomyr Zelensy, a former actor and producer, Michel Hazanavicius says: “I didn’t have an actor in front of me, I had a president from a country at war.”

“He is a very simple person, he is very accessible, but you feel that there is gravity behind it and that he is someone who has enormous responsibilities and who handles files that are otherwise more important than talking to a director.”

“I remind you that I did OSS 117I’m not a military strategist,” jokes Michel Hazanavicius, “but if you ask me the question, I think we should support Ukraine as much as possible and on all fronts.”
