Thousands of people volunteered to adopt a baby born under the rubble in Syria

Thousands of people have volunteered to adopt the baby who was born under the rubble of a building that collapsed on Monday in Syria after the 7.8-magnitude earthquake with its epicenter in Turkey.

The hospital where the baby, who was given the name Aya – which in Portuguese means sign from God or miracle – was taken, is flooded with calls and messages on social media, but the hospital’s director, Dr. Khalid Attiah, ensures that when the baby is discharged, it will be handed over to her relatives.

For now, Aya remains in Afrin hospital and is being breastfed by Khalid Attiah’s wife, alongside their own four-month-old daughter. “I won’t let anyone adopt her. Until the most distant family returns, I will treat her like my own daughter,” promised the doctor, quoted by BBC.

Aya was rescued ten hours after the earthquake. She was born under the rubble and when they found her she was still attached to her mother by the umbilical cord. Her mother, her father, and four of her siblings did not survive.

When she arrived at the hospital, the baby was injured and was breathing heavily. He is now in stable condition.

Aya was taken to the hospital by Khalil al-Suwadi, an estranged relative who was present at the time of the rescue, but will initially be handed over to the care of a great-uncle, Salah al-Badran, who lives in a countryside. large tent. .

Speaking to the Associated Press, he explained that “after the earthquake, no one can live in their house or building,” because with the hundreds of aftershocks, everyone is unsafe.

this Thursday at TSFUnicef warned about the plight of thousands of children who could end up alone after the earthquakes that hit Turkey and Syria. There is a campaign to collect donations here.
