At least four French citizens are among the victims of the violent earthquake that struck Turkey and Syria on Monday, the French Foreign Ministry announced on Friday.
“At this moment, we mourn four French victims,” he told AFP, adding that they all died in Turkey.
The Quai d’Orsay adds that it is following “with the greatest attention the situation of the French present in the area at the time of the earthquakes, in collaboration with the Turkish authorities.”
Open crisis cells
To guarantee their protection, the Crisis and Support Center of the Ministry and the French Embassy in Ankara have opened crisis cells.
“Given the difficult situation in this area, we urge the French who have considered going there to postpone any travel plans,” the ministry also requests.
In all, more than 22,300 people died in one of the region’s worst disasters in a century.
