Moldovan president appoints prime minister to form new government

Moldova’s president on Friday appointed businessman and former prime minister Dorin Recean as the new head of government following the unexpected resignation of Natalia Gavrilita, who had headed the executive branch for 18 months.

Maia Sandu said at a press conference that members of the Action and Solidarity Party (PAS, in power) accepted Recan’s choice as the new prime minister.

“I know we need unity and a lot of work to face the difficult period we are going through. The difficulties of 2022 have postponed some of our plans, but we are not going to stop”said the head of state, adding that in 2023 she wants to focus on the decisive areas of economy and justice.

Recean, a 48-year-old economist who served as interior minister between 2012 and 2015, has 15 days to form a new government, which will be put to a vote in parliament.

He stated that he will “proceed immediately” with the preparation of the new government and that the main priority will be to “bring order and discipline” to Moldovan institutions, to give new impetus to the economy and to ensure peace and stability.

Following her resignation today, Gavrilita, a 41-year-old economist who was appointed prime minister in August 2021, said at a press conference that her government “could have progressed more quickly” if it had received the same support and backing. trust as an internal level compared to what it got from other European countries.

Gavrilita’s run was marked by a long list of problems. One of the main challenges is a serious energy crisis after the sharp reduction in supplies from Moscow, and high inflation in the small country following the Russian invasion of neighboring Ukraine. And the reports of Russian missiles flying through the skies of Moldova in the context of the war.

He also said that no one expected his government to be able to “manage so many crises resulting from Russian aggression in Ukraine”.

“I took office with an anti-corruption, pro-development and pro-European mandate at a time when corruption programs imprisoned all institutions and oligarchs felt untouchable,” said Gavrilita. “We immediately faced energy blackmail and those who did this expected us to give up.”

“The bet of our country’s enemies was that we would act like the previous governments, who gave up energy interests, who betrayed national interests in exchange for short-term benefits,” he added.

Sandu thanked Gavrilita today for her “huge sacrifice and efforts to lead a country in a period of so many crises”.
