Venezuelans rescued in Brazil in a situation close to slavery

In Brazil, 24 Venezuelans who worked in conditions similar to slavery were rescued. Brazilian authorities report that some of the migrants were caring for four-month-old newborns.

Venezuelans found out about the job offer through a social media post, the ad specifically targeting citizens of Venezuela.

The coordinator of the rescue operation, Joel Darcie, guarantees that the migrants were employees of a construction company in Rio do Sul, in the municipality of the state of Santa Catarina, and were in “degrading” hygiene conditions and in “absolute informality “.

The salaries of the workers were three thousand reais (about 535 euros), to which are added the expenses of accommodation and food provided by the company.

The Venezuelans will now be transferred to hotels in the Rio do Sul region, while the construction company will be forced to terminate contracts and pay more than 240,000 reais (about 43,000 euros) for work rights.

Official data from the Brazilian Ministry of Labor and Employment indicates that in 2022 the country rescued more than 2,500 workers in slavery-like conditions.
