Survivors rescued a week after the earthquake. There are 35 thousand dead

Rescue teams pulled a 40-year-old woman alive from the rubble of a collapsed building in southern Gaziantep province, Turkey, on Monday, while other teams in Kahramanmaras were digging a tunnel to reach people if they were injured, according to the broadcaster it involves a grandmother, a mother and a 30 day old baby CNN Turkquoted by Reuters.

In the second case, teams made up of Turkish military, miners and Spanish firefighters are working together after being alerted to the existence of life in the rubble by a sniffer dog, technical officer Halil Kaya said.

A thermal device also detected the existence of living people and meanwhile a detected sound was also heard.

The miners dug about ten feet into a neighboring building that still stands, placing support beams along the way. “When we said ‘knock on the wall if you can hear us,’ we heard a soft tap,” said Kaya.

“Our colleagues here are all working 24 hours without sleep… We will all be here until we get these people out of there,” he added.

On Sunday, rescue teams from Russia, Kyrgyzstan and Belarus pulled a man alive from a building that collapsed some 160 hours after the earthquake in Turkey, Russia’s Emergency Situations Ministry announced.

This Monday, Turkish and Syrian authorities updated the death toll from the earthquakes a week ago to 35,000.

Turkish authorities said they had recorded 31,643 deaths in the country, while there are 3,581 confirmed deaths on the other side of the border, according to official sources quoted by the French agency AFP.

The UN said on Sunday the death toll could double as thousands of people remain under the rubble of collapsed buildings.
