Moldovan president accuses Russia of plotting coup

The President of Moldova accused Russia on Monday of planning a coup in the country with the help of citizens of Belarus, Serbia and Montenegro trained by the military to carry out violent actions disguised as protests.

“The plan intends to use subversive elements with military training, in civilian clothes, to organize violent actions, attacks on some state institutions and take hostages,” said Maia Sandu, in a message published live in the main Moldovan media.

The objective is, “through violent actions, disguised as protests by the so-called opposition, to force a change of power in Chisinau,” stressed the liberal and Europeanist president.

Sandu said that the documents handed over by Ukraine – whose president, Volodymyr Zelensky, denounced, last week, in Brussels, a Russian plan to destabilize Moldova – “indicate the places and the logistics of the organization of this subversive activity.”

“The plan also provides for the use of foreigners for violent actions”, which contains “instructions on the rules for entering Moldova [aplicadas] citizens of Russia, Belarus, Serbia and Montenegro,” the head of state said.

Sandu denounced that Russia also wants to use “various internal forces, especially criminal groups, such as the (pro-Russian political) formation Shor and all its members, veterans and people close to (the fugitive oligarch, Vladimir) Plahotniuc, in the execution of the plan.” .

The Moldovan president reiterated that the objective of these actions “is to undermine the constitutional order and transform the legitimate power of Chisinau into an illegitimate one in order to make the country available to Russia.”

With this, Moscow intends “to stop the process of European integration, but also to make Moldova be used by Russia in its war against Ukraine,” he warned.

Sandu guaranteed that the state security forces are working to prevent these provocations and keep the situation under control.

The Moldovan president, however, considered it necessary for the parliament of the former Soviet republic to adopt, “as soon as possible, the bills that will provide the Information and Security Service (SIS) and the Public Ministry with the necessary instruments to fight more effectively against risks to the security of the country”.

“All those who participate in these actions directed against the state of the Republic of Moldova – foreign elements, members of political parties and criminal groups – and all those who protect them, will be held accountable,” Sandu said.

“The Kremlin’s attempts to organize violence in our country will not succeed. We remain calm and believe in Moldova,” he concluded.

Moldova summoned Moscow’s ambassador to Chisinau, Oleg Vasnetsov, on Friday to protest against the “unacceptable violation” of Moldovan space, after two Russian cruise missiles allegedly flew over the airspace of NATO country Romania and from Moldova , before entering Ukraine.
