Rescue workers save 13-year-old boy after 182 hours under rubble

A 13-year-old boy was rescued alive after 182 hours under rubble in a building in Turkey’s Hatay province that collapsed just a week ago during the devastating earthquakes that devastated Turkey and Syria.

The rescue of the young man, Kaan, was broadcast live by local television station Halk TV and is another one that continues to take place drop by drop among the thousands of buildings that collapsed due to the earthquakes and their aftershocks. Experts estimate that up to 155,000 victims will lie under the rubble.

Four hours earlier, a 70-year-old woman and a 26-year-old woman had been rescued alive after 178 hours of resistance. Both cases occurred in Antakya, the capital of Hatay province.

Further north, in Adiyaman province, a six-year-old girl was also rescued this morning after being trapped under rubble for 176 hours.

Experts say the low temperatures, hovering around zero degrees these days, even in Hatay province – the southernmost province hit by the quake – could aid survival by delaying dehydration.

Most of the rescues over the past two days, which the Turkish press described as “miraculous”, took place in Hatay, one of the areas most devastated because it lies on a geological fault line despite its distance from the earthquake’s epicenter.

According to data released today by the World Health Organization (WHO), the earthquakes that devastated southern Turkey and northwestern Syria a week ago caused at least 40,943 deaths – 31,643 dead in Turkey and about 9,300 in Syria.

In Syria, a country ravaged by civil war since 2011, about 4,800 people have died in areas controlled by the regime of President Bashar al-Assad, according to the WHO, while about 4,500 people have died in areas controlled by the rebels.
