Stoltenberg: “Ukraine has a chance”. But “time is of the essence”

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg this Wednesday welcomed allies’ contributions in support of Ukraine, at a time when he sees a “window of opportunity” to unbalance the war in Ukraine’s favour.

“I welcome the new pledges of support from NATO allies, including more heavy weapons and military training,” Stoltenberg said, referring to the “fundamental” aid, at a time when he believes “Ukraine has a chance to tip give the balance, and time is of the essence”.

At the meeting he convened at the headquarters of the Atlantic Alliance in Brussels, bringing together representatives of the 54 members of the contact group for Ukraine, the NATO Secretary General also highlighted the support provided by the allies on other fronts, through the “comprehensive assistance package” that has made it possible “to supply Ukraine with food, fuel, medical equipment, anti-drone systems and amphibious bridges”.

Regarding the ammunition shortage facing Ukraine, Stoltenberg said the problem is already being addressed and “meetings with the defense industry have been arranged”.

“We see that things are indeed moving in the right direction,” at a time when “the United States [e] France signed contracts, but so did other allies,” said Jens Stoltenberg, giving the examples of “Germany” [e] Norway”.

“There are others too [Estados] who have already signed contracts with the defense industry,” he added, without naming names, expressing the belief that “this means that production is now increasing.”

Defense Minister Helena Carreiras expressed Portugal’s support “to the extent possible, subject to Ukraine’s requests”.

“I was able to announce here the most important package of military support that Portugal has given to Ukraine, including, as is known, the three Leopard 2A6 tanks, which are being delivered under a plan that also provides for the replacement of our capabilities, the repair of our tanks,” said the minister.

“This is very important because it allows us to fulfill our international obligations and with this help our capacities will not be exhausted,” stressed Helena Carreiras.
