During the court hearing, a woman spoke in a heated tone and addressed Gendron, who listened and did not respond. At one point, however, another man interrupted him and, moving towards the gunman in an attempt to attack him, promised to attack him.
Police officers present at the scene managed to stop the man, and the perpetrator of the massacre was immediately removed from the scene and the session cancelled.
However, Payton Gendron had already been sentenced to life in prison after pleading guilty to 15 charges against him, including murder and domestic terrorism motivated by hate.
The Erie County District Attorney further ruled that life imprisonment is mandatory and that he is not eligible for parole while serving his sentence.
Guendron defined himself as a lone wolf at trial, but he is part of a group of far-right radicals who gather on underground internet forums to defend the racist and xenophobic theory that the white race will die out and be replaced by people black, latina and Muslim.
