The majority of Europeans believe that Ukraine will win the war

A majority of Europeans (62 percent) believe Ukraine will win the war against Russia, while 68 percent say the Russian invasion is an attack on all of Europe, according to a study released Thursday.

According to the Bertelsmann Foundation document, Spaniards are slightly above the European average, as 62% of them believe in a victory against Russia, which militarily invaded Ukraine on February 24, 2022. The highest skepticism about Ukraine’s victory in this conflict is recorded in Germany (55%) and Italy (51%).

The study was conducted using the German foundation’s Eupinions tool to measure European opinion.

The idea of the Russian invasion of Ukraine as an attack on the whole of Europe is particularly accepted in Poland (79%) and Spain (78%).

Most people interviewed for the survey believe that Ukraine upholds common European values.

“This unit is a very important indicator,” says Isabell Hoffmann, specialist for Europe at the Bertelsmann Foundation and responsible for Eupinions.

“The existence of common and shared values is fundamental to legitimize the European Union (EU) and its member states to continue to support Ukraine. As the war continues, it is important for Ukrainian citizens to know that the vast majority of European citizens recognize the progress”.grew.

On the other hand, 75% of respondents believe that the decision to start peace talks or to continue fighting is a matter for the Ukrainians.

The main differences can be found in the position on the effectiveness of sanctions against Russia.

Only 40% of the respondents consider sanctions an effective tool, another 40% consider them ineffective and the remaining 20% have no opinion on this.

As for the blame for the war, 66% of respondents blame Russia, 11% the United States, 5% NATO, 5% Ukraine, and 13% have no opinion on the issue.

Concern about the war is high and 66% say they feel insecure and that the world situation is more dangerous than in previous times.

This concern is particularly high in Spain, where it reaches 75%.

“Public concern is exceptionally high at the moment. Not surprising, given the brutality of the war and the real threat level. It can be said that people who are very concerned continue to express their support for Ukraine, as well as European citizens in the general”, further stated Isabell Hoffmann.
