Ukraine: New airstrike hits facilities used for humanitarian aid

The United Nations (UN) denounced on Thursday that another airstrike has hit facilities used to distribute humanitarian aid in Ukraine, and regrets that civilian infrastructure in the conflict continues to be spared.

In a statement, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs said that in Chasiv Yar, in the Donetsk region of eastern Ukraine, a depot belonging to the non-governmental organization (NGO) Proliska was destroyed in the early hours of Wednesday. has been affected.

“Yesterday (Wednesday), the humanitarian community in Ukraine woke up to find again that another aid facility had been damaged in airstrikes. (…) The structure served as a hub where the organization and other partners – including the United Nations – have sent relief supplies to people facing heightened hostilities in Bakhmut, Avdiivka and other frontline communities.”explained humanitarian coordinator Matthew Hollingworth, quoted in the briefing note.

‘Fortunately no one was injured’he added.

This was the third attack in just two days to hit facilities used for humanitarian aid distribution.

The day before, a warehouse belonging to the national NGO Tarilka in Kherson was hit, injuring an aid worker.

The incident jeopardized the logistics of Tarilka and other organizations dedicated to supporting communities at the forefront of the conflict in the Kherson region (southern Ukraine).

“On the same day, another airstrike hit a facility used by several aid groups in Kostiantynivka in the Donetsk region. We also continue to receive horrific reports of houses, schools and hospitals being hit day in and day out in front-line areas”denounced Hollingworth.

The UN stressed that civilian infrastructure, including relief and health facilities, is vital to the people of Ukraine and “not a target”, and urged “constant care” to prevent further damage.

The Russian military offensive on Ukrainian territory, launched on February 24 last year, plunged Europe into what is considered the most serious security crisis since World War II (1939-1945).

The Russian invasion of Ukraine, justified by the Russian President, Vladimir Putin, with the need to “denazify” and demilitarize Ukraine for Russia’s security, was condemned by the international community at large, which responded by sending arms to Ukraine. and impose political and economic sanctions on Russia.

At least 17.7 million Ukrainians currently need humanitarian aid and 9.3 million need food aid and shelter, according to UN data.
