US condemns North Korean ballistic missile launch

The United States on Saturday condemned North Korea’s launch of a ballistic missile into the Sea of Japan and announced that it will take “necessary measures” to ensure the security of the territories of its Japanese and South Korean allies.

“This is a flagrant violation of several UN Security Council resolutions [Organização das Nações Unidas]Adrienne Watson, a spokeswoman for the White House National Security Council, said in a statement.

North Korea launched an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) that landed in the waters of Japan’s exclusive economic zone, sending a strong message on the eve of Seoul and Washington launching joint military exercises.

Although the US Indo-Pacific Command has determined that this launch does not pose an “immediate threat” to the territories of the United States of America and its allies, Washington considered that it “unnecessarily increases tensions and risks destabilizing the security situation in the region.

The United States urged the international community to condemn North Korea’s missile launch and urged Pyongyang to cease its “destabilizing actions” and engage in “serious dialogue.”

Watson stressed that the US national security team is in close coordination with its partners and allies and that the United States will “take all necessary steps” to ensure its security and that of its allies, explicitly referring to Japan and South Korea.

Pyongyang carried out a record number of missile launches last year and this latest comes after more than a month and a half without a single weapons test.
