More than 44,000 people died in Turkey after the two strong earthquakes that struck the country and northern Syria on February 6, the authorities announced this Saturday, who rescued two people from the rubble.
Some 300 hours have elapsed since the earthquake measuring 7.8 on the Richter scale -with its epicenter in Turkish territory- and followed by several aftershocks, one of them measuring 7.5, the chances of finding survivors are decreasing day by day.
This Saturday, a man and a woman were found alive, after having spent 296 hours trapped in the rubble of Antakya, the state news agency Anadolu announced.
However, a 12-year-old girl found with the couple died minutes after rescuers tried to save her.
The news agency also adds that the couple’s three children, including a 12-year-old boy, died in the quake.
On the social network Twitter, Turkey’s Health Minister Fahrettin Koca posted a video of the 40-year-old woman in a field hospital receiving treatment.
“She’s conscious,” he said.
The region affected by the earthquakes extends over 100,000 square kilometers, with around 14 million people.
The World Health Organization (WHO) raised this Friday to 84.5 million dollars (79 million euros) the international request for financial aid for those affected by these earthquakes.
