Former US President Jimmy Carter receives palliative care at home

Former US President Jimmy Carter (1977-1981), age 98, receives palliative care at his home, where he will spend the rest of his life. “After a series of brief hospitalizations, former US President Jimmy Carter today decided to spend what time he has left at home with his family and receive palliative care rather than further medical intervention.”as reported Saturday by the Carter Center on Twitter.

Carter is the oldest living former president of the United States. He lives in Plains, where he was born and worked as a peanut farmer before becoming governor of Georgia and later president. “The Carter family requests privacy and appreciates the concern of his many admirers. He has the full support of his family and medical team,” said the foundation, named after the former president.

Architect of the Camp David Accords, which led to the signing of the peace treaty between Israel and Egypt in March 1979, the Democrat was heavily criticized for taking American hostages in Iran in 1979-80.

After leaving the White House, he founded the Carter Center to promote development, health and conflict resolution around the world. In 2002, he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for “decades of tireless efforts to find peaceful solutions to international conflicts”.

Jimmy Carter suffered from several health issues that saw him hospitalized multiple times in 2019.
