The President of the European Council proposes a pact with Africa on migration

The President of the European Council, Charles Michel, proposed this Sunday in Addis Ababa a pact between Europe and Africa that combats illegal immigration but also creates conditions for legalized immigration that responds to the labor needs of European countries.

Present in Addis Ababa to attend the 36th Summit of Heads of State and Government of the African Union (AU), Charles Michel met today with the new acting president of the AU, with whom he discussed migration issues involving both continents.

“I think we have found the way forward for an alliance [entre a Europa e a UA] against criminal groups that traffic in human beings, that somehow abuse misery and misfortune,” he said, stressing: “We also have to open legal migration routes” for those seeking Europe, Charles Michel told reporters at end of the meeting with the President of Comoros, Azali Assoumani.

“This is the right approach, in my opinion,” said the European Council president, who praised Comoros, which holds the rotating AU presidency.

“The European Union will work closely with the African Union and with the team of the president of the Comoros to make it a success,” said Charles Michel, recalling that there is a “common agenda” defined at the last summit between the two continental blocs. . .

“We want to work for more development, more economic development, we need alliances, we will also work for more security and peace,” he said, adding that “very specific issues were discussed, such as food sovereignty, health or infrastructure.”

But “what matters is that there are results, that there is action and that the populations of Africa and Europe can see the positive effects of this partnership,” he warned.
