China’s chief foreign policy chief assured this weekend that China “has always been on the side of peace and dialogue” in a meeting with Ukraine’s foreign minister Dmytro Kuleba.
According to a statement from China’s diplomacy, Wang Yi, the Chinese Communist Party’s foreign policy chief and former foreign minister, told Kuleba that the country is “ready to work with the international community to prevent further deterioration of the situation.” situation”.
Wang also said China and Ukraine are “strategic partners” and thanked Kiev for “sticking to the ‘One China’ principle”. The recognition of that principle, seen by Beijing as a guarantee of its sovereignty over Taiwan, is seen as a basic condition for establishing diplomatic relations between China and other countries.
The Chinese official said he is hopeful that relations between China and Ukraine will “continue to develop steadily”.
Kuleba stated that “no country is as eager to achieve peace as Ukraine” and that the government “gives great importance to China’s international status and considerable influence,” according to a statement from China’s foreign ministry.
“I hope China continues to play a constructive role,” said the Ukrainian minister.
During the conference, Wang Yi warned that there are no “easy solutions” to the conflict.
“We need to think about a structure and Europe needs to think about the autonomous and strategic role it can play. No matter how difficult the situation is, we can’t stop looking for peace,” he said.
Since the start of the “crisis” in Ukraine almost a year ago, China has suggested that Russia and Ukraine “sit together at the same table” to reach a “political solution” to the conflict, the senior Chinese official said.
Since the start of the war in Ukraine, Beijing has taken an ambiguous stance calling for respect for the “territorial integrity of all countries”, including Ukraine, and consideration for the “legitimate concerns of all countries” in security matters, in a reference to Russia.
For its part, the international community has repeatedly asked the Asian country to use its good relationship with Moscow to mediate the conflict.
