Brussels calls on member states to avoid outbreaks in autumn and winter

“Today [sexta, 2 de setembro]The Commission proposes concrete measures to prevent an outbreak of Covid-19 cases in the coming autumn and winter season. The Commission is urging Member States to put in place the necessary strategies and structures, including for vaccination and surveillance against Covid-19, in order to respond quickly and sustainably to future outbreaks,” the community administrator announced in a statement.

Emphasizing that “the main objective of the measures proposed by the Commission is to increase the use of vaccines, including modified and new vaccines, and to ensure that all citizens are well protected”, Brussels calls on countries to implement “national vaccination strategies develop” and ensure logistical capacities sufficient “to administer vaccines as soon as new and modified vaccines are delivered”.

It is imperative for the community administration that the national authorities improve compliance with the basic vaccination schedule and the first booster dose among those who qualify, prioritize the administration of additional booster doses for specific population groups, such as people over 60 years of age or who are seriously ill, combine the anti-covid-19 vaccination with the flu and even make a “clear communication to the citizen about the benefits of vaccination”.

In addition to vaccination, the European Commission calls for “surveillance of respiratory viruses such as influenza” and emphasizes that restrictive measures such as the use of face masks or limiting the size of concentrations “remain a crucial part of Member States’ toolbox” to limit the spread.

“It is important that all Member States are ready to reintroduce public health measures based on clear thresholds”, and that “all measures taken in schools should be adapted to the educational context and age group and minimized to avoid disruption of education,” says Brussels.

In the case of the free movement of persons and goods, the institution states that, with regard to travel from third countries, “it will shortly propose a revision of the Council Recommendation to take into account the change in the epidemiological situation, the increase in vaccination worldwide and the evolution of entry requirements in Member States”.

Moreover, Brussels calls for “strong health systems and capacities in all Member States”.

Cited in the note, European Health Commissioner Stella Kyriakides points out that “the pandemic is still very much alive”, and warns that this will be a “new time of challenges”.

“We must now act, together, in a coordinated and sustainable way to prevent another outbreak of serious cases of Covid-19,” concludes the European in charge of protection.

The position comes a day after the European Medicines Agency recommended the approval of two vaccines modified to boost protection against Covid-19, namely against the Ómicron variant of the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus.
