A 6.6-magnitude earthquake struck off the east coast of Taiwan on Saturday, according to the United States Geological Survey Institute (USGC).
The epicenter of the quake, which struck shortly after 9:30 p.m. local time, was located about 50 km north of the city of Taitung at a depth of 10 km, the USGC said.
So far, local media have reported no injuries or damage. The Taiwan Meteorological Service, for its part, estimated the magnitude of the earthquake at 6.4 and its depth at 7.3 kilometers.

Taiwan and its surroundings are regularly hit by earthquakes due to its location near the junction between two tectonic plates. The island does not issue a tsunami warning for earthquakes of magnitude less than 7.
According to the USGS, casualties from Saturday’s earthquake are unlikely, but damage is possible.
