The US president has warned Vladimir Putin that there will be consequences if Russia uses nuclear or chemical weapons in Ukraine and has asked his Russian counterpart not to do so, according to the EFE news agency.
“No, no, no. It will change the face of war like never before since World War II,” Joe Biden said in an interview with CBS’s “60 Minutes” program, quoted by EFE.
In an excerpt from the program, Efe describes, journalist Scott Pelley asked the US president about the possible US response if the Russian president resorts to nuclear or chemical weapons to change the course of the conflict in Ukraine.
Joe Biden responded that there would be “consequences” and that the Russians would “become the biggest outcasts the world has ever seen.”
“The answer will depend on the scope of what they do,” warned the US Democratic leader.
Since the beginning of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine on February 24, the United States and its allies have imposed sanctions on the Russian financial sector, Putin and scores of Russian officials, businessmen and oligarchs, and provided military aid to kyiv.
The United States believes that China and India are increasing “pressure” on the Kremlin to end the war after their leaders Xi Jinping and Narendra Modi expressed concern to Putin about the consequences of the conflict.
