England: In London, protesters demand ‘justice’ for black man killed by police

The young man was shot dead by a police officer while being chased by a patrol car.

Across the Channel, there is life outside of Elizabeth II’s funeral. This Saturday, dozens of people demonstrated outside the headquarters of Scotland Yard to demand “justice” after the death of a black man at the hands of a police officer, which has revived the debate about racism in the London police.

Chris Kaba, 24, was shot dead by a police officer in south-west London on September 5 when he was being chased by a patrol car driving his car. The young man, who was unarmed, was injured and died overnight in hospital.

His family had called for a murder investigation, wondering in a statement whether Chris Kaba would have died “had he not been black.”

Gathering not far from Westminster, where the coffin of the late Queen Elizabeth II is on display, protesters demanded “justice” for the victim on Saturday.

“He didn’t have a gun. So why was he shot? Why was he killed? He was going to be a dad. His son is going to grow up without his father, why?” Writer Chris Sibia asked. AFP. saying that he was overwhelmed by “injustice”.

A nine-month investigation?

According to police, Chris Kaba’s license plate had been picked up by a camera reporting the vehicle was linked to a firearms incident in the previous days.

The police officer behind the shooting was suspended and the police force (IOPC) opened an investigation for “homicide”. The latter indicated that it would seek to determine if the fact that the victim was black could have influenced.

However, the family expressed anger that the investigation could take up to nine months.

In 2020, the arrest by the London police of the black athlete Ricardo Dos Santos, his partner and their baby, in the midst of the Black Lives Matter movement in the United States, caused a scandal.

It has led to the opening of a wide-ranging investigation into racial discrimination within the police.

Since then, former Scotland Yard director Cressida Dick resigned in February, following a damning IOPC report that pointed to racist, misogynistic and discriminatory behavior within her teams.
