Pope calls for ceasefire in Ukraine and start of peace talks

Pope Francis on Wednesday called for a ceasefire in Ukraine and the start of peace talks, noting that the Russian invasion will last a year on Friday.

“I call on all authorities to get involved in ending the conflict, agreeing a ceasefire and starting peace talks”declared Francis at the end of the general audience in the Vatican.

“Someone built on rubble will never be a real victory,” he added.

The pope recalled that the Russian military invasion of Ukraine will complete “a sad anniversary” on Friday, underlining that this is “an absurd and cruel war”.

“The toll of deaths and injuries, displaced people, destruction, economic and social losses speak for themselves. Can the Lord forgive so many crimes and so much violence?” continue to suffer”.

The pope asked if “everything possible has been done to stop the war?”

At that point, Francis launched his call for a ceasefire and the start of peace talks in front of several hundred people, including a group of Ukrainian delegates, in the Vatican’s Paul VI Hall.
