A Spanish teacher died this Wednesday after being stabbed by a student from the Saint-Thomas-d’Aquin school in Saint-Jean-de-Luz, in southwestern France. The attack was ruled a murder, local prosecutor Jerome Bourrier confirmed.
According French newspaper Sud Ouest, students who witnessed the situation say they saw the suspect remove “an object wrapped in paper” from his backpack. The 16-year-old student got up, blocked access to the door and attacked the teacher: “We heard a scream and then nothing,” they denounce.
The 50-year-old teacher was found with chest injuries and in cardiorespiratory arrest. Despite his best efforts, emergency medical services were unable to revive the teacher, who was ultimately pronounced dead at the scene.
The motives of the attacker are unknown, who was immediately neutralized and detained by the police authorities.
Several teams of psychologists came to the school to listen and help the students who witnessed the attack.
French Education Minister Pap Ndiaye said he was “extremely affected” by the teacher’s death and went to the school.
