The Brazilian Government has ordered the Federal Police to open a new investigation into the death of the activist and councilor Marielle Franco to expand collaboration between the institutions and discover the criminal organization behind this murder.
The Brazilian Minister of Justice, Flávio Dino, said this Wednesday that the government is doing everything possible to help clarify the facts, as promised by the president, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who already in the pre-campaign cast doubts about the possible relationship between the crime and former president Jair Bolsonaro.
The person in charge of the investigation will be Police Chief Guilhermo de Paula Machado. The objective is to strengthen the work that the Public Ministry of Rio de Janeiro has been carrying out after several years in which the representatives of the victims denounced maneuvers to hinder the resolution of the case.
The murder of Marielle Franco and her driver Anderson Torres, who was driving the car in which the activist was traveling in March 2018 when the vehicle was shot by hitmen, shocked part of Brazilian society.
Afro-descendant, bisexual and a prominent activist for the defense of minority rights, Marielle Franco was shot while walking through downtown Rio de Janeiro after participating in a political rally with women.
There are currently two people in custody, Ronnie Lessa, the alleged shooter who was not expelled from the Military Police until this month, and his partner, Elcio Queiroz, the driver of a car used in the crime.
According to some witnesses, Queiroz was seen the same night of the crime looking for the house that Jair Bolsonaro has in Rio de Janeiro, although it was verified that the former president was in Brasilia at that time. The investigation continues to find possible masterminds of the crime.
