The Government of Brazil confirmed on Thursday the detection of a case of “mad cow” in the state of Pará and announced the suspension of beef exports to China.
“Following the official sanitary protocol, exports to China will be temporarily suspended as of this Thursday,” read a statement released by the Brazilian Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock.
The animal, raised in pastures, without food, was slaughtered and its corpse cremated on the spot, said the Brazilian Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock, adding that it had already reported the case to the World Organization for Animal Health (OMAS) and that The samples were sent to the institution’s reference laboratory in Alberta, Canada.
“All the measures are being adopted immediately at each stage of the investigation and the matter is being dealt with with total transparency to guarantee Brazilian and world consumers the recognized quality of our meat,” assured the minister of the portfolio, Carlos Fávaro.
Brazil, one of the world’s largest beef exporters, has more than half of its export sales in this segment in the Chinese market.
In total, Brazil exported the equivalent of 12.34 billion euros of beef in 2022, an increase of 42% compared to 2021.
