The United Nations (UN) General Assembly this Thursday approved by an overwhelming majority of 141 votes a resolution demanding the “immediate withdrawal” of Russian troops from Ukraine and calling for “a comprehensive, just and lasting peace”.
The draft resolution, drafted by Ukraine and its allies with the support of the European Union, received 141 votes in favour, seven against and 32 abstentions from the UN’s 193 member states, further reinforcing Moscow’s isolation on the international scene.
Russia, Belarus, Syria, North Korea, Eritrea, Mali and Nicaragua voted against this text, and among the abstaining countries are China, Angola, Mozambique and Cuba.
The vote took place during a special emergency session of the General Assembly to mark a year of Russian war in Ukraine. and after two days of speeches from nearly a hundred states.
Although this resolution is not binding, it has political weight and has shown which countries still refuse to condemn Russia a year after the war.
In view of the adopted resolution, Belarus, Moscow’s closest ally, proposed a series of amendments that were first voted on but rejected.
