Zaporijia power plant reconnected to the grid

The Zaporijia nuclear power plant has been reconnected to the Ukrainian grid, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said this Saturday after the connection was cut two weeks ago, raising the risk of an accident.

“The restored 750 kV line now supplies Europe’s largest nuclear power plant, whose last operational reactor was shut down on September 11, with the electricity needed to cool the reactors and other essential safety functions,” the IAEA said in a statement. .

According to the IAEA, engineers have repaired one of four power lines damaged during the war. Previously, essential functions were maintained by the electricity produced by the plant itself and by the emergency power lines connecting the plant to a nearby thermal plant.

“While the situation has improved over the past week, the overall situation for the factory in the middle of a war zone remains precarious,” IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi said in the statement. “While there have been no recent attacks on or near the Zaporijia plant, they still occur in a wider area,” he added.
