At least 16 children died this Friday, after a collision between a school minibus and a truck on a highway about 300 kilometers north of Durban, South Africa, authorities said.
The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Transportation reported 16 deaths, while local media reported that 19 children between the ages of 5 and 12 and three adults died.
“The death of so many young people is a great tragedy,” Sipho Hlomuka, the provincial transport minister, said in a statement.
The accident took place in the Pongola region, near the border with Eswatini.
South Africa has one of the best road networks on the continent, but road safety remains an issue due to dangerous driving behaviour.
