The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, welcomed this Saturday the approval, this Friday, of the tenth package of sanctions from the European Union (EU) against Russia for having invaded Ukraine a year ago.
“I welcome the formal adoption of the 10th package of sanctions against Russia, the most extensive in history,” Von der Leyen wrote on the social network Twitter, quoted by the Spanish agency Europa Press.
The European Commission president said the new sanctions were designed to deplete Russia’s war arsenal and hit the country’s economy.
“We are also increasing the pressure on those who try to circumvent our sanctions,” he said.
The new EU package includes restrictions on exports of European technological items important for the functioning of the Russian military and also targets Iran for its support for Russia in the context of the war.
The new sanctions were approved two hours before the end of the first anniversary of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, which plunged Europe into what is considered the worst security crisis since World War II (1939-1945).
The package includes a ban on importing various Russian industrial products, such as synthetic rubber, which has been at the center of discussions in recent days, due to divisions in the EU over the allowed quota or the transition period for application. of the import ban.
Under the 10th package, the EU added around 100 people and entities to its “blacklist”, including military and political commanders, as well as propagandists and those responsible for spreading false information about the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
In total, one year after the invasion of Russia, the EU already imposes sanctions on more than 1,300 people and more than 170 entities, including Russian President Vladimir Putin and military commanders, officials and oligarchs who cooperate with the regime to facilitate aggression against Ukraine. .
Putin ordered the invasion on February 24, 2022 to “demilitarize and denazify” the neighboring country.
The number of civilian and military casualties from the conflict is unknown, but several sources, including the UN, have admitted that it will be high.
In addition to new sanctions against Russia, Ukraine’s Western allies marked the first anniversary of the war by announcing more military support for kyiv.
