Tropical storm Freddy knocked out power to 3,300 Electricidade de Moçambique (EDM) customers in the southern province of Inhambane, the public company announced in a statement on Saturday.
The storm knocked down 21 medium voltage poles and destroyed one transformer pole, affecting the districts of Vilanculo, Inhassouro, Mabote, Massinga and Funhalouro.
“EDM’s technical teams are on the ground, intervening in the network to progressively restore” power, but adverse weather conditions and the inaccessibility of some locations “have been the biggest obstacles,” the company announces.
“The total cost of replacing the damage caused in Inhambane is 6.6 million meticals (about 100,000 euros),” he concluded.
Tropical storm Freddy caused damage to two health centers and 24 classrooms on Friday, according to a preliminary diagnosis by the authorities, without registering victims.
According to meteorological services, the storm has lost strength and is heading towards the interior of the country and then towards Zimbabwe, nevertheless maintaining the potential to cause heavy rains in the coming days.
The forecast keeps the south of the country on alert, where river flows are high and the ground is saturated with the floods registered since the beginning of the month, especially in Maputo and surroundings.
The depression that reached Mozambique on Friday crossed the island of Madagascar this week in the state of a tropical cyclone, causing seven deaths and affecting 78,000 people.
