Portuguese Navy escorts new passage of Russian ship off the coast

The navy accompanied another Russian ship’s passage off the national coast on Saturday, the General Staff of the Armed Forces (EMGFA) announced on Sunday, citing it as “normal surveillance procedure”.

“The Portuguese armed forces, through naval assets belonging to the National Forces System, escorted the passage of a Russian naval vessel off the national coast yesterday, February 25,” the EMGFA said in a statement.

The note states that this is “normal procedure for the surveillance of maritime spaces under national sovereignty or jurisdiction, when warships from non-NATO countries are in Portuguese waters”.

“The tanker ‘MOD Altay kola’ passed through Portuguese waters, coming from the North Sea. The Portuguese naval vessel accompanied the Russian ship from the northern coast of Portugal to the border of Vila Real de Santo António, a journey of 362 miles of nautical activities, the equivalent of about 670 kilometers,” adds the EMGFA.

Also in January, the navy monitored the passage of ships from the Russian Federation off the coast of Portugal for several days.
