Greenpeace blocks Russian natural gas discharge in Finland

Greenpeace activists on Saturday blocked a Russian gas discharge at a liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal in Tornio, northern Finland, the terminal operators and environmental organization revealed.

“This is a cargo ship that contains liquefied natural gas from Russia,” Olga Vaisanen, a spokeswoman for the Finnish group Gasum, the importer of the blocked cargo, told France-Presse.

The director of Manga LNG (LNG in English) that manages the terminal, Mika Kolehmainen, explained that the action started at dawn and that the militants are preventing the ship carrying the gas from being unloaded to the terminal area, very well situated. close to the Swedish border.

Last week, Greenpeace activists also blocked an unloading of Russian LNG at a natural gas terminal in Nynäshamn, near Stockholm, Sweden.

“It is totally unacceptable that Russian gas continues to circulate in Finland more than six months after (Vladimir) Putin (Russian president) began the invasion of Ukraine”Greenpeace activist Olli Tiainen said in a statement.

“The Finnish government and Prime Minister Sanna Marin must immediately ban all imports of Russian fossil fuels,” he added.

Currently, there are no European sanctions on gas imports from Russia, only on oil and coal.

Russia halted pipeline deliveries to Finland in May due to payment difficulties, but liquefied gas deliveries by ship continue.

Last Wednesday, however, tensions between Moscow and the European Union over gas supplies rose, with President Vladimir Putin threatening to halt all supplies of hydrocarbons in the event of a price cap, a possibility Brussels admits.

Russia launched a military offensive in Ukraine on February 24, which is still ongoing, leading the European Union, among other mainly Western countries, to impose strong economic and political sanctions against Moscow.
