NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said on Tuesday that Ukraine will join the Atlantic Alliance in the “long term”, but stressed that the immediate problem is that it will remain an independent nation despite the Russian invasion.
“The NATO allies have agreed that Ukraine will join our alliance, but at the same time this is a long-term perspective,” Stoltenberg said during a visit to the Finnish capital Helsinki.
Stoltenberg has scheduled meetings with Finnish Prime Minister Sanna Marin and President Sauli Niinisto after Turkey announced it would resume talks with Sweden and Finland over both countries’ NATO membership.
Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu announced this week that negotiations will resume on March 9.
