Pelosi condemns Azerbaijan’s ‘deadly attacks’ on Armenian territory

The Speaker of the US House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, condemned this Sunday in Yerevan Azerbaijan’s “deadly attacks” against Armenian territory.

“On behalf of Congress, we strongly condemn Azerbaijan’s deadly attacks on Armenian territory,” Pelosi said at the joint news conference with Armenian parliament speaker Alen Simonyan.

Pelosi arrived in Yerevan on Saturday on a plane from Berlin, where she was participating in a G7 event.

This is Pelosi’s first visit to Armenia, a fact of great importance for the small Caucasian country, which this week denounced the incursion of Azerbaijani troops into its territory and attacks on civilian infrastructure.

“From the United States to Ukraine to Taiwan to Armenia, the world is facing a choice between democracies and autocracies and we must choose democracy again,” Pelosi wrote in a message posted on social media on Saturday.

In the clashes that broke out between the parties on September 13, which Baku blamed on a “large-scale provocation” by Yerevan, more than 210 soldiers from both sides were killed.

The US lawmaker said at the press conference that Washington confirmed that Azerbaijan had attacked Armenia.

“Congress has drafted a resolution that will condemn Azerbaijan’s aggression,” he said, promising to continue to help Armenia fight against the violation of its border.

Pelosi also condemned Azerbaijan’s actions against civilians in Nagorno-Kharabak, territory disputed by Yerevan and Baku, and acts of “vandalism” against Armenian heritage in the area.

The president of the Armenian parliament, in turn, thanked the US for its help and called for sanctions to be imposed on Baku to curb its “expansionist ambitions”.

Pelosi meets today with the Armenian Prime Minister, Nikol Pashinián, and with other authorities of the country.

The Speaker of the US House of Representatives will also participate in another press conference and speak at the Cafesjian Art Center.
