Mozambique assumes the presidency of the UN Security Council with a focus on the fight against terrorism

The fight against terrorism and the prevention of violent extremism will be highlighted during Mozambique’s monthly presidency of the United Nations Security Council, official sources announced Wednesday.

In a presentation of the Security Council’s March agenda, Mozambique’s permanent representative to the UN, Pedro Afonso, announced that Mozambique’s President, Filipe Nyusi, will chair the high-level debate “Combating terrorism and preventing violent extremism by strengthening cooperation between the UN and regional organizations”, scheduled for the 28th.

“Terrorism is a great concern in the world today and therefore we must unite our efforts to defeat and eradicate it. (…) Our experience in Cabo Delgado shows us that we must continue to fight terrorism in the world, ”he said. Alfonso.

This will be one of the main acts of his presidency, together with a debate on “Women, Peace and Security”, scheduled for March 7 and which will be chaired by the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation of Mozambique, Verónica Macamo.

“This is a historic moment, as Mozambique has never before been a member of the Security Council. In three months from the beginning of our term, we are now in the presidency. This program was unanimously adopted by my Council colleagues this morning and has a long range of events and meetings”, evaluated Pedro Afonso.

Throughout March, Mozambique also scheduled a meeting on security sector reform, which will bring together representatives of the UN Secretariat, the African Union and civil society and aims to provide the Security Council with updates on the efforts of the Secretary General. security sector reform.

Between March 9 and 12, the Security Council has also scheduled a visit to the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRCongo), as well as a ‘briefing’ on the United Nations Mission in the country (Monusco).

Several other topics on Africa are on the agenda this month, including an open debate on the “silence of the guns in Africa”, a meeting on the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNmiss) and the renewal of its mandate. , a meeting on the UN Integrated Mission for Transition Assistance in Sudan (Unitams), and a meeting on the implementation of the Somali Transition Plan.

Mozambique also scheduled meetings on Syria, Yemen, Lebanon, the Golan Heights, Afghanistan, North Korea, Myanmar and Palestine.

Asked about the conflict between Israel and Palestine, Pedro Afonso stated that Mozambique’s position is that “there should be two States: Palestine and Israel, living in harmony side by side”, noting that “Mozambique has fostered this rapprochement”.

Despite not having scheduled any meetings on Russia’s war in Ukraine -an issue on which he has abstained from voting in the UN General Assembly-, the ambassador said he was sure that events on this conflict would be scheduled throughout throughout the month

On January 3, Mozambique began its two-year term as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council.
