G20 meeting ends without joint statement due to disagreements

The meeting of G20 chiefs of diplomacy ended this Thursday in New Delhi without a final joint statement highlighting the differences that exist between the members of this forum over the war in Ukraine.

Instead of a formal communiqué, the hosts of the meeting opted for a concise text of the debates held, stating that each of the countries reiterated their respective positions regarding the conflict unleashed a little over a year ago by the Russian military offensive .

“Most members categorically condemned the war in Ukraine, emphasizing that it causes immense human suffering and exacerbates existing weaknesses in the global economy,” says the final text, in which the G20 – which includes Russia and China – reiterates that there are “other points of view” about this subject.

While also acknowledging that “the G20 is not the forum to resolve security issues”, the text notes that such issues have “significant implications for the global economy”.

Similarly, respect for international law and multilateralism, “which ensure peace and stability”, are classified as “essential” in the document.

The summary communiqué also qualifies the threat associated with the use of nuclear weapons as “unacceptable” and defends diplomacy as a means of conflict resolution.

Russia’s Foreign Minister Serguei Lavrov took advantage of his presence at the meeting to criticize the sanctions imposed on Moscow for its invasion of Ukraine, claiming they were “illegal”, and deplored the “arbitrary” limits on commodity prices or the “manipulation of markets” to harm Russia.
