At least two injured in Hong Kong construction site skyscraper fire

At least two people were injured in a fire that broke out on Friday in a skyscraper under construction in the commercial district of Tsim Sha Tsui, in the Chinese administrative region of Hong Kong.

The bamboo scaffolding was engulfed in flames at around 12:35 a.m. (4:35 p.m. Thursday in Lisbon), the Hong Kong English-language South China Morning Post reported.

The fire caused objects to fall on the street and injured two drivers, who were immediately taken to the hospital.

The incident forced the evacuation of more than a hundred people from residential buildings, shopping centers and hotels in the area.

The fire, which affected six adjacent buildings, was practically extinguished at 08:30 (00:30 in Lisbon), according to the authorities.

The work in question is a remodeling of the old Mariner’s Club yacht club, scheduled for last year, but delayed by the covid-19 pandemic.

The club opened in 1967 and was demolished in 2018. In addition to the Mariner’s Club, the 42-story building will also house a hotel, Hong Kong radio and television station RTHK said.

The city has been affected by a series of fires in recent months.

In January, it took firefighters almost 10 hours to control a fire at an industrial building in the San Po Kong area.
