The floods that are affecting southern Malaysia, after heavy rains, have caused at least three deaths and displaced 35,000, the country’s authorities reported on Friday.
The hardest-hit state is Johor in southern Malaysia, with more than 31,000 people relocated to 209 temporary shelters, according to Malaysia’s national disaster management agency.
An elderly couple was found dead in their home on Thursday and a man died on Wednesday after being swept away by a stream of water, state news agency Bernama told police.
The floods are also affecting some 3,000 people in the states of Pahang, Negeri Sembilan and Melaka, and to a lesser extent in Sarawak, on the Malaysian part of the island of Borneo.
The meteorological authority of the Asian country predicts that between today and tomorrow the heavy rains will continue in Johor, in addition to continuing to affect several areas of Pahang.
Malaysia has two rainy seasons: one caused by the southwest monsoon, between May and September, and the other by the northeast monsoon, from October to March, which is the most severe and generally affects the eastern part of the peninsula and the island of Borneo. . .
