Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni assured this Saturday that her government will not hinder rescue operations for victims of the sinking of a migrant boat in Calabria.
“Can there really be anyone in their right mind who thinks the government deliberately let 60 people die?” Meloni asked at a press conference while visiting Abu Dhabi.
Last Sunday, a migrant boat sank in Calabria, killing at least 69 people. Dozens of people remain missing.
“Please, let’s be serious,” the official yelled.
Authorities have opened an investigation into whether the rescue operations were delayed due to negligence.
Giorgia Meloni’s government defends the Coast Guard, which follows its rules to deal with situations like this.
