The Italian Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, assured this Saturday that her Government did not prevent the rescue operations of the victims of the sinking of an immigrant ship in Calabria.
“Can there really be anyone in their right mind who thinks the government deliberately let 60 people die?” Meloni asked at a press conference during a visit to Abu Dhabi.
An immigrant ship sank last Sunday in Calabria, killing at least 69 people.
Dozens of people are still missing.
“Please, let’s be serious,” he appealed to the official.
Authorities have opened an investigation into whether the rescue operations were delayed due to negligence.
Giorgia Meloni’s government has been defending the coast guard, which it said follows its rules to deal with this type of situation.
