According to the Greek newspaper Proto Thema, the order did not sound strange to the driver since the signaling system on the train tracks has been out of order.

In a second conversation, although disseminated by the authorities, the same Larissa station manager ordered an employee to keep the two trains on the same track.

For several kilometers, the two trains traveled the same line that connects Athens with Thessaloniki, the two largest cities in the country, and ended up colliding head-on near the city of Larissa.

Initially, the stationmaster denied any error saying it was a technical glitch, but later admitted to failing.

The situation forced the Greek Prime Minister, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, to apologize to the families of the victims of the railway accident, after several protests, such as the one today in Athens, where there were violent clashes with demonstrators who set fire to garbage bins and They threw ‘Molotov cocktails’ at security agents, who responded with tear gas.
