Fifteen undocumented immigrants were detained by Florida authorities and Border Patrol in an operation that seized 4 pounds of fentanyl, enough to kill a million people.
Florida’s Department of Highway and Vehicle Safety (FLHSMV) released a statement Monday that the synthetic opioid recovered in a week in Sumter County, in the state’s center, is “enough to kill a million people.”
The operation, in which Hernando County officers participated, also seized 17.6 kilograms of methamphetamine, about 13.6 kilograms of cannabis and more than $22,000 (about $20.5,000) in addition to “other illegal contraband such as cocaine , heroin and suboxone”.
The operation, in which Florida police officers participated, took place as part of a state campaign to intercept smuggling and human trafficking and to seize weapons that may be circulating in the state.
The authorities have not provided details about the nationalities of the detainees or the conditions of their detention.
The Florida Highway Patrol, an agency of the FLHSMV that monitors millions of miles of roads each year, assured that it is committed to “the arrest of people who are transporting undocumented migrants and dangerous narcotics.”
