This Tuesday, the Brazilian government expressed “concern over reports of serious violations of human rights and restrictions on the democratic space” in Nicaragua, at a meeting of the Human Rights Council of the United Nations (UN), in Geneva ( Swiss).
“The Government of Brazil is following the events in Nicaragua with the greatest attention and is concerned about the reports of serious violations of human rights and restrictions on the democratic space in that country, in particular summary executions, arbitrary detentions and torture against political dissidents”, said Tovar da Silva Nunes. , Ambassador of Brazil to the UN.
The diplomat also reinforced that Brazil is in favor of dialogue with the regime of Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega and other relevant actors, but added that his country is “extremely concerned” by the decision of the Nicaraguan authorities to “remove his nationality.” . of more than 300 citizens.
“Reaffirming its humanitarian commitment to the protection of stateless persons and the reduction of statelessness, the Government of Brazil makes itself available to welcome the people affected by this decision, under the terms of the special statute provided for in the Migration Law of Brazil”, concluded Silva. Nunes, in his brief speech at the 52nd regular session of the Human Rights Council.
Brazil’s stance in the debate over allegations of human rights violations in Nicaragua has been criticized as the country chose not to join a bloc of 55 countries that signed a statement criticizing the Ortega regime last week.
This Monday, a group of UN Human Rights experts presented a report stating that crimes against humanity are committed by the Government of Nicaragua “as part of a generalized and systematic line of conduct” against part of the population the country for political reasons.
The report, which investigated 159 cases and interviewed 291 victims and witnesses, documents human rights violations such as extrajudicial executions, arbitrary detentions, torture that included sexual violence, or arbitrary deprivation of nationality, among other abuses.
Faced with these violations against people who oppose the Nicaraguan government “or so they perceive it,” the group of experts urged the Ortega regime to immediately put an end to the abuses and hold the perpetrators of the violations accountable, guaranteeing justice to the victims.
However, the report concludes that behind these crimes against humanity are Ortega and his wife and vice president, Rosario Murillo, as well as senior officials of the National Police and other state entities.
The group of experts was created based on a resolution approved in March 2022 by the UN Human Rights Council itself to investigate and gather evidence on the crisis in Nicaragua that originated after the 2018 citizen protests.
After the intervention of the experts, the Attorney General of Nicaragua, Wendy Morales, rejected the conclusions of the experts in a video message, according to what she said, prepared with information “from sectors of the opposition that disseminate subjective, distorted situations and facts. and false”. “.
