The European Parliament is warning its employees to avoid metro stations and a shopping center in the European capital where the European institutions and NATO headquarters are located, due to the suspicion of a bomb attack.
In an internal message, to which DN had access, the Directorate-General for Security of the European Parliament identified two precise locations that were “mentioned as potential targets”, namely the shopping center “The City 2” and “at the Metro station Rogier”.
“European Parliament officials in Brussels are asked to maintain their usual vigilance and avoid the area, as well as the metro,” the note from the European Parliament reads.
The American embassy in Brussels also warns American citizens of the possibility of an attack in the Belgian capital.
The security alert on the embassy’s website asks in particular to avoid “crowded” areas and to “pay extra attention” to the surrounding areas.
The Belgian press claims the alarm comes from a notification from the European Commission to Belgian authorities, after its security services intercepted a message “written in Russian” indicating precise targets to carry out an attack in Brussels .
According to the newspaper Le Soir, the Belgian police say they take the threat “very seriously” and have already carried out inspections “with police dogs that can detect explosives”. The investigations carried out were “negative” and no signs of explosives were detected.
“But we remain very vigilant, all police forces are on high alert,” the newspaper quotes, also noting that the federal prosecutor’s office has already opened an investigation to identify the author or authors of the bombing threat.
