Ukraine: the Kremlin calls the discovery of hundreds of bodies in Izium a “lie”

While Russia is being singled out for the discovery last Thursday of a 445-grave mass grave in the Ukrainian city of Izium, the Russian authorities are in complete denial.

The Kremlin on Monday called reports of the discovery of 445 bodies and a mass grave in Izium in eastern Ukraine on September 15 “lies” after the withdrawal of Russian forces from the region.

“It is a lie. Of course, we will defend the truth in this case,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said.

The Russian army denies

“It’s the same scenario as in Boutcha,” he said again, referring to another city in Ukraine where Russian forces have been accused of committing abuses, which Moscow denies.

In Boutcha, the first mass grave discovered after the beginning of the Russian withdrawal, the death toll had risen to 458 people and almost all had gunshot wounds or traces of torture or beatings.

The Kremlin then claimed that the victims lying on one of the city’s streets were comedians, some moving their arms or chests in certain videos. These movements were due to optical effects, as well as the sometimes low quality of the videos.

A theory had also been circulating that the dead were actually victims of the Ukrainian army. It had finally been demolished by satellite images that showed the presence of the bodies even before the departure of the Russians from the city.
