The UN Secretary General, António Guterres, said on Wednesday that it is of “critical importance” to extend Ukraine’s cereal export agreement signed with Russia, recalling that it is vital for the world’s food supply.
“I want to underline the paramount importance of extending the Grain Agreement on March 18, as well as creating the conditions to make the best use of export infrastructures,” Guterres said during his visit to Kiev.
The UN Secretary General recalled that this is his third visit to the Ukrainian capital and explained that his presence should be seen as a “total commitment to find solutions” to the conflict that began in February last year.
Guterres highlighted the work of the United Nations in the evacuation of prisoners at the Ukrainian Azovstal steel plant and in preserving the safety of nuclear power plants: “Our ultimate goal is clear: a just peace.”
In addition, the UN Secretary General said that the price index of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) has fallen by almost 20% in the last year, so it is essential to guarantee the grain exports and Ukrainian ( as well as Russian) fertilizers “for world food security.”
